National Day of Prayer

Washington, DC. It seems like there’s always something swirling around in this town doesn’t it? I guess being at the epicenter of politics, egos and controversy will do that for ya. Today is the National Day of Prayer. For the last 8 years, under George W. Bush, the first Thursday in May was a day that was held aside and celebrated as a time to really focus on praying for the leaders of our government, our country and our world. This year, President Obama has decided to forgo the service all together. CNN reports:
“Although there are no public events scheduled at the White House, representatives from the legislative and judicial branches are expected to attend an event the National Day of Prayer Task Force is holding on Capitol Hill.
But, despite numerous attempts to get a representative from the executive office to attend, “it doesn’t appear they are going to fulfill our request,” said Becky Armstrong, marketing and media manager of the National Day of Prayer Task Force.
“The White House is a small part of what the national day of prayer is all about. Tomorrow there will be dozens of events held in our nation’s capitol and governors from all 50 states have already issued proclamations recognizing the National Day of Prayer,” Armstrong said.
“It would be belittling to those millions of people to reduce this day to merely one event not being held at the White House.”
It appears we have all but forgotten that this country was founded as a Christian nation. If you mention Christianity in the confines of the US Government, you will be attacked by the “separation of church and state” mantra. The fact is, despite what many Americans may believe, this phrase isn’t found ANYWHERE in our US Constitution. It is, however, found in the Constitution of the Soviet Union:
“In order to ensure to citizens freedom of conscience, the church in the U.S.S.R. is separated from the State, and the school from the church. Freedom of religious worship and freedom of antireligious propaganda is recognized for all citizens.”
And clearly, that mentality and decision to exist as an Athiest State worked out really well for the Soviet Union. Truth be told, I’m just really disappointed in this administration’s decision to distance itself from a day of prayer that this country to greatly needs. Thankfully, we answer to a much higher power than the president of a country and Obama’s decision can’t stop us from praying right alongside our fellow believers.

For those interested in more information on the National Day of Prayer, check out their website. In addition, I want to tell you ladies about a really valuable resource I just recently stumbled upon. Our friends over at Thomas Nelson Publisher’s recently released The American Patriot’s Bible. While this Bible has been regarded as controversial by some, I was very impressed by the information included in it. It paints a very clear picture of how our founding father’s intended this country to be run; that we were founded as a Christian nation. I personally have already picked up a copy for my dad and brother (both history buffs) and have been pulling devotions from it the past several weeks. I think we are at a time in our history where knowing where we came from is vital, where if we ignore the principles this country was created on, we will find ourselves in a very compromising position later on. I highly recommend this Bible for any of those in your family who have an interest in American patriotism and the foundations of this great nation.
